چکیده

This text together with the attached paper [8] surveys results on color-critical graphs, with emphasis on sparse ones. The first two sections discuss the important contributions by Dirac and Gallai and present proofs of some remarkable results of them. The next two sections discuss the later progress and a number of applications of the recent results. We also use [8] for description of some applications. In Section 6 we present a proof for 4-critical graphs of a conjecture of Gallai on sparsest color-critical graphs. In the last section, we briefly survey similar problems for hypergraphs and triangle-free graphs and mention some unsolved problems. Recall that a (proper) k-coloring of a graph G is a mapping g : V (G) → {1, . . . , k} such that g(v) 6= g(u) for each vu ∈ E(G). The minimum k such that G has a k-coloring is the chromatic number of G, denoted by χ(G). For a positive integer k, a graph G is k-critical if χ(G) = k, but every proper subgraph of G is (k − 1)-colorable. It is easy to check that the complete k-vertex graph Kk is k-critical and that each odd cycle is 3-critical.

Lecture Notes Mpri 2.38.1 Geometric Graphs, Triangulations and Polytopes

These lecture notes on “Geometric Graphs, Triangulations and Polytopes” cover the material presented for half of the MPRI Master Course 2.38.1 entitled “Algorithmique et combinatoire des graphes géométriques”. The other half of the course, taught by Éric Colin de Verdière, focusses on “Algorithms for embedded graphs” [dV]. Announcements and further informations on the course are available onlin...

New Constructions of Antimagic Graph Labeling

An anti-magic labeling of a finite simple undirected graph with p vertices and q edges is a bijection from the set of edges to the set of integers {1, 2, ..., q} such that the vertex sums are pairwise distinct, where the vertex sum at vertex u is the sum of labels of all edges incident to such vertex. A graph is called anti-magic if it admits an antimagic labeling. Hartsfield and Ringel conject...

CS 167 : Reading in Algorithms Triangle - Dense Graphs ∗

In these notes we discuss a paper of Gupta, Roughgarden, and Seshadhri, “Decompositions of Triangle-Dense Graphs” [1]. The motivation of the paper is to develop a theory of algorithms for social networks, like the graphs derived from Facebook or Twitter data mentioned in the first lecture. That is, the goal is to develop graph algorithms that work well on social networks, if not on worst-case g...

Chromatic number of sparse colored mixed planar graphs

A colored mixed graph has vertices linked by both colored arcs and colored edges. The chromatic number of such a graph G is defined as the smallest order of a colored mixed graph H such that there exists a (arc-color preserving) homomorphism from G to H . We study in this paper the colored mixed chromatic number of planar graphs, partial 2-trees and outerplanar graphs with given girth.
